3.5 x 2.3 x 1.8 cm. Cronstedtite is a rare iron silicate of the serpentine group. This very rich and showy little specimen is festooned with lustrous, black, trigonal crystals to 3 mm on a 3-dimensional crust of matrix. It is a rare occurrence to have such a rich coverage of cronstedtite, and this specimen displays very well. This is a classic
Cronstedtite is most stable at the temperature of ∼0 °C at moderately oxidizing aqueous conditions and at high water/rock ratios. Although cronstedtite could form on planetesimals, the apparent lack of serpentine may indicate its formation by Ceres’ temporary surface solutions. The rare mineral cronstedtite has been first described as early as in 1820 from the Vojtěch Mine in Příbram by Steinmann in 1820 [1, 2]. It is named in honor of Swedish chemist and mineralogist Axel Fredrik Cronstedt (*23.12.1722, †19.8.1765), one of founders of the modern mineralogy. Chlorite is a common mineral associated with hydrothermal ore deposits and commonly occurs with epidote, sericite, adularia and sulfide minerals.
